KRMT Shareholder “Gives Back” by Organizing Concert
to Benefit the Homeless
As part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to “give back” to the community, audit shareholder Kevin Essex was instrumental in planning a concert to benefit the Homeless Emergency Project (HEP).
One of Kevin’s classmates in the Leadership Pinellas Class of 2009 is John Monte who plays guitar in a local band, Cross Eyed Larry. When approached with the idea, John and his band mates enthusiastically agreed to play the benefit concert which was appropriately called “Band Together”. Kevin and his fellow Leadership Pinellas class members used their time and talent to organize the concert and raise nearly $25,000 to fund HEP’s Freewheel Bike Program. Freewheel is a not-for-profit bike repair shop and distribution program operating as part of the Homeless Emergency Project in Clearwater which serves homeless adults and children throughout Pinellas County. The program provides the freedom of personal transportation to homeless adults and children and helps recycle and refurbish donated bikes and bike components for clients of HEP.
So why HEP and its Freewheel Bike Program? “Our class wanted to do something for the community that would have a significant impact in the current economy. We recently visited HEP and realized that homelessness in our area has risen significantly with the downturn in the economy and we wanted to do something to help right now. Our Leadership class had a lot of fun coming together for a great cause” said Kevin.
The Leadership Pinellas Class of 2009 will be presenting the check to HEP at 5:00 PM on April 19th at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center.

Passion for Golf Fuels KRMT Shareholder Community Involvement
KRMT audit shareholder Bruce Murphy has a love for all sports. As both a participant and a spectator, however, Murphy’s passion for the sport of golf trumps all others. That is why Bruce’s involvement with the “Copperheads” is such a natural.
The Copperheads is a group of local business leaders that has more than a thirty year history of helping local charities through professional golf. Most recently the group put on the Transitions Championship tournament, a 72 hole PGA Tour event held at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Copperheads, Bruce worked with the PGA and Innisbrook staff as well as more than 1000 tournament volunteers. Their work made for a spectacular event witnessed by millions of golf fans throughout the world through live television coverage.
However, the work of the Copperheads goes far beyond this PGA event. In the past five years alone the Copperheads have helped raise more than $8 million for local charities. This year more than 100 bay area non-profit organizations actively participated through the “Birdies for Tampa Bay Charities”. Their involvement was a grass roots fundraising program that provided each organization with an opportunity to raise money for their organization based on the number of “birdies” by each contestant during the tournament.
Whether playing in the Pro-Am or interacting with professional golfers Bruce is definitely in his element through his involvement with the Copperheads. As he explains, “It is an incredible experience. There aren’t many opportunities in life to be involved in an organization that allows me to combine my passion for golf with the ability to help so many great charitable organizations throughout the Tampa Bay community”.
